Hello my name is Laura Van Nieuwkerk. My husband, Ton, and I began selling handmade sterling silver and gemstone jewelry online after visiting low-caste silversmiths working in Kathmandu, Nepal.
There we learned about the people, the culture, the poor conditions and how the low-caste system has shaped the lives of Nepalese people for centuries.
Imagine a world where your worth is predetermined by the circumstances of your birth, where doors are closed to you simply because of your caste. For the marginalized communities in Nepal, this is a harsh reality they face every day. Denied access to basic rights and opportunities, they are trapped in a cycle of poverty and marginalization.
Just like a finely woven tapestry, the low-caste systems in Nepal are intricately intertwined with the country's history, religion, and social norms. These systems, known as "Dalit" or "untouchables," have long been marginalized and discriminated against, facing social, economic, and political challenges that have perpetuated their status as the lowest rung of society.
Despite efforts to promote equality and social justice, the low-caste communities in Nepal continue to face systemic discrimination, poverty, and lack of access to basic resources such as education and healthcare. The legacy of the caste system, deeply rooted in Nepalese society, poses a significant barrier to the advancement and empowerment of these marginalized groups.
As the world evolves and progresses, there is a growing awareness and movement towards dismantling the oppressive structures of the caste system in Nepal. Advocates and activists are working tirelessly to challenge the status quo and create a more inclusive and equitable society for all individuals, regardless of their caste.
As global citizens, we decided to be advocates by importing handmade jewelry crafted by skilled silversmiths from low-caste communities. Each piece tells a story of tradition, resilience, and artistry, making it a unique addition to any collection.
